This comprehensive full-home renovation project, located in Fall River, Nova Scotia, showcases a transformation designed to meet the homeowners’ evolving needs and enhance their living space.
The basement renovation focused on creating a more functional and inviting space while resolving a water issue. The original basement had a dated layout with limited functionality. The renovation updated the layout to create a brighter, more usable area. The basement bathroom was also remodelled, maintaining the original floor plan but incorporating modern fixtures and improved flow. This is a great example of what a full home renovation can look like in Halifax and the HRM with an experienced Halifax renovator.
A key element of this project was the transformation of the kitchen to an open-concept design. The original kitchen had a closed-off layout with traditional cabinetry, restricting natural light and flow. The renovation involved removing the barrier between the kitchen and dining room to create a more spacious, connected area. This included a kitchen remodel featuring a large island, custom cabinetry, and a design that integrates with the home’s existing architecture. Our Halifax team designed and installed the custom cabinetry. The existing fireplace was replaced with a more modern design, and columns on the main floor were modernized. New flooring was installed throughout the home, including refinishing existing hardwood where possible.
The project included remodelling the ensuite bathroom. A focus for many home renovations, the ensuite remodel here focused on creating a more functional and elegant space. It features a freestanding soaker tub, a custom glass-enclosed shower, a double vanity with premium stone countertops, and custom built-in storage. The design aimed to balance sophisticated aesthetics with practicality.
Beyond these major renovations, the project included new lighting fixtures, interior painting, built-in storage solutions, updates to the laundry and mudroom areas, a new front entry door, and new window treatments.
The project addressed several challenges. Resolving the basement water issue was a priority, involving a detailed assessment and appropriate solutions. Creating the open-concept kitchen, a popular request for many renovations required careful planning to manage structural implications. Balancing the homeowners’ desires with the budget was achieved by presenting three budget levels to allow for informed decisions. As with all renovations, this project was coordinated with and carried out in compliance with local building codes and regulations. Material issues and timelines were also worries, however, they were managed through proactive problem-solving and efficient project management, including in-house crafting of a custom wood mantle to meet deadlines.
This renovation also incorporated sustainable and healthy living elements, important considerations for modern home renovations. Natural hardwood flooring was restored, and demolition waste was reduced by installing new flooring over the existing surface. Minimal demolition helped limit waste. Ventilation systems and a high-powered exhaust fan were installed to improve air circulation and control moisture. Low-VOC paints and adhesives were used to enhance indoor air quality. Waterproofing membranes and vapour retarders were installed to prevent moisture buildup and mould. Energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting were incorporated. Low-flow fixtures were used for water efficiency. Non-toxic, eco-friendly materials were chosen for countertops, flooring, and cabinetry. Durable, low-maintenance materials were selected for flooring.
