A full-scale renovation transformed an outdated bathroom in Dartmouth Nova Scotia into a modern and highly functional space. The project focused on maximizing usability, enhancing the design, and creating a more accessible and enjoyable room for the homeowners.
The renovation began with a complete demolition of the existing structure, revealing the challenges common to older homes. This process uncovered piles of seaweed that had been stuffed in between the studs, a material that was historically used as insulation in the Halifax area. The demolition also exposed outdated plumbing systems necessitating full replacement, and damage to floor joists and subflooring also required repair. Electrical systems were also updated to comply with current safety standards. Efficient design solutions were essential to maximize usability within the existing space. The original interior door, which contained lead paint, required specialized removal and refinishing.

Throughout the design and planning phase, a collaborative approach was emphasized. Options were presented for the plumbing layouts, balancing the existing configuration with potential relocations to optimize the space. Material selections aimed to integrate modern aesthetics with elements that complemented the home’s character. Emerald green subway tiles and a corresponding vanity were chosen to introduce specific color accents and create a focal point. Marrakesh decorative tile was incorporated, reflecting the homeowners’ personal style. The existing medicine cabinet was retained and refinished, preserving a historical element and adding a unique touch.

The completed renovation resulted in a significantly transformed bathroom. Key features of the remodeled space include a custom-tiled shower with a built-in bench and grab bars, a space-efficient vanity to maximize the room, and upgraded fixtures. Accessibility was a key priority throughout the project. Improvements were made to insulation and ventilation systems, and low VOC paint was used to enhance indoor air quality.
This project demonstrates the potential for substantial and successful transformations within older homes in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). It effectively balances modern requirements with the existing structure’s character. The renovation successfully addressed the structural, infrastructural, and aesthetic challenges, resulting in a significantly improved and more functional living space for the homeowners.
