Things You Should Know to Build A Basement Home Theatre

  • July 12, 2020
  • General Design Ideas

Do you have an empty, unfinished, and unused basement area in your home? No idea what to do with it? Well, a basement can be turned into anything. But, as the area is separated from the rest of the home, a home theatre can be the best option.

It is tough to get dedicated space in the indoor area for home theatre. But the vast area and structure of the basement are perfect for family gatherings to enjoy sports or movies. The concrete made wall and floor are add-ons for the home theatre as they can easily control noise.

Build A Basement Home Theatre – 11 Facts to Know

So, what things you need to take into consideration while building a basement home theatre? These are discussed below-

  • Purpose of the room

At first, you will need to decide the purpose of the room. The room can be mainly used for watching movies or for multiple things like gaming, watching a football match, hosting parties, and so on. You need to decide the purpose of creating a basement home theatre very carefully so that everyone can get benefit from it.

  • The budget

The budget plays a vital role while deciding the layout and settings of the home theatre. A complete home theatre is available in different price ranges depending on the features and music system. You should distribute your budget wisely into separate parts. You must spend 1/3rd of the budget into the speaker system. A majority portion in the video display, and others for buying different devices, cables, wiring, etc. to support the whole system.

It is important to allow the maximum budget to the speakers and amplifiers. Most of us spend a lot of money on video projectors and forget about the other systems. However, a home theatre is nothing without a good output of sound. You need to match the video quality with high-quality sound for a better experience.

  • Screening type and setting

The next thing you need to look for is the screening type. You can go for a flat screen or projector. Existing TV can also be used for setting up a home theatre. However, you can also upgrade your existing screening type. Video projector with higher resolution is a great choice nowadays for any type of home theatre setting.

If you have got a larger space in your basement area, you can go for a larger screen. But you also need to remember, the larger the screen will be, the more space should be there in between the screen and sitting arrangement. There should not also be any glare and outside light affecting the overall screening experience.

  • Lighting arrangement

Generally, the basement area is dark, and outside lighting option is very limited to it. So, one should arrange the necessary lighting arrangement for the basement area. The color of the wall and lighting arrangement should be simple in your basement area. It is better to choose dark colors for the ceiling and adjust color accordingly. There should be a soothing feeling all over the room.

  • Proper wiring

It is important to make proper wiring arrangement in your home. A lot of electricity is required to run a complete home theatre system. If you want to keep the basement area neat and clean, you should do pre-wiring to every equipment and hide as much as wire possible behind the wall.

  • Soundproofing the area

The basement area should be soundproofed properly. If you have got an unfinished basement area, you can do necessary customization according to your needs. It is better to give finishing to the wall with a sound dampening drywall. A thick carpet, high-density vinyl, can eat up the music and don’t let it go outside of the room. You can also get a soundproofing curtain for the windows.

  • Moisture control

It is crucial to control the moisture level of your basement area. Due not to reach proper light and air, the basement area can lock some moisture. And dampness in the wall and ceiling can cause some severe damages to the electronic things. Before building a basement home theatre, it is essential to take necessary precautions against dampness. The use of a dehumidifier can reduce the chance of humidity in your basement area.

Along with considering the above things, you also need to take some safety measurements for your basement home theatre. These are-

  • Fire exit

Having a fire exit is a must in the basement area if it is used for any functionality. As different electronic products would be there in the home theatre, accidents can happen anytime due to short circuits or other malfunctions.

  • Smoke alarm

Any area equipped with electronic items should have a smoke alarm. Electronic items can be hot anytime. To avoid any type of accidents, using a smoke alarm is mandatory.

  • Flood insurance & other precautions

If the sewerage line is directly connected with the basement area, you need to have flood insurance and other safety equipment to save the space from flood and other damages. Equipment for the home theatre is usually expensive. To save them from any accidents and dangers, you need to take preventive measures.

  • Proper air circulation

The basement area should not be stuffed too much. It should have proper air circulation. If you are building a home theatre from scratch, you need to arrange the necessary ventilation system.
